Twitter may be working on their own photo sharing service, but today they rolled out a long-awaited feature: automatic link shortening. Now, whenever you type a link into the Twitter webapp, it will shorten anything over 11 characters using their t.co service. What’s really great is that your original link (or a truncated version of it) will still show up in tweets, so people still know where they’re going (and don’t have to worry about phishing attacks). Sadly, if you want to use anything other than t.co (like bit.ly, which provides statistics and other features), you’ll still have to shorten links from that service’s home page. Still, if you still use the Twitter webapp instead of a dedicated client, this is a huge convenience. Note that the feature still seems to be rolling out, and you might not see it on your account just yet—but you should soon.

On April Fools this year, Google introduced Gmail Motion which allowed users to control Gmail using gestures and body movement. At first, it wasn’t anything more than a prank, but now it has become a reality thanks to the Kinect and some open source gesture software. Check out a video demo below and try it out yourself using the FAAST software library.

Whether you’re flying coach or just sitting at a less than ergonomic table, this modded laptop hinge will give you complete control over your screen’s placement.
Originally designed on the Ben Heck Show for travelling on airplanes, this laptop mod actually looks like it would be useful in a multitude of situations, especially if you’re the type that likes to watch movies on your computer. You’ll need some fairly heavy-duty tools to pull this mod off, including a soldering iron, Dremel, a multimeter, and a utility knife, but if you’ve got the DIY skills, this is actually a really cool mod to try out. Check out the video below to see how the hinge works, and hit the link for the full episode of the show to see how it all comes together.

Here’s another neat way to make use of that old computer that has been lying around your house: Turn it into a red burning laser using parts salvaged from the dead computer. The burning laser is powerful enough for you to wear safety goggles.
The components you need to salvage are: the power supply, DVD Burner (16x speed or more), and the heatsink. The DVD Burner provides the laser diode which is housed in the heatsink proofing. The PSU and the right wires are connected to the heatsink and the laser module. That’s it! The heatsink helps to run the laser long enough to burn through things like plastic and ignite matches.

So, you dropped your phone in water. You are screwed, right Nope, just order some Chinese Food, and you’re good to go – Sort of. Actually, submerging your phone in dry rice or silica gel packets are a simple, effective way to resurrect your phone. Moisture absorbant silica gel packets can be purchased for a few bucks and effectively dry your phone. Dry rice has this same affect as well and helps to unbrick your phone. Read more about saving a wet cell phone.
“One final, perhaps surprising, note: If your phone gets soaked in salt water, you should probably flush the whole thing in fresh water before it dries. When salt water evaporates, it leaves crystals that can damage a phone’s fragile components. Just be sure to remove the battery before flooding the device.”
